A week at the dental school in Manchester

29 September 2017

A week at the dental school in Manchester

This was a busy week at the Dental School at the University of Manchester.  Dental School Dean, Professor Paul Coulthard, gives us an insight to what is being going on.

We had a welcome event on Monday for all new Postgraduate Taught Course (PGT) and Postgraduate Research (PGR) students that was very well attended. This included a welcome from Dr Nick Silikas, Director of Graduate Education, Prof Julian Yates, PGT Tutor, Dr Jilll Dixon, PGR Tutor, and myself. Dr Juliette Kendall discussed plagiarism, Prof Anne-Marie Glenny discussed health service and research culture, and Dr Rebecca Craven provided an introduction to Student Support Services.

‪We have appointed Dr Curd Bollen to the post of Senior Lecturer in Periodontology. Dr Bollen is currently based in Holland and living in Belgium.

A ‘Global Evidence Summit’ was held in Cape Town 13-16 September. Dr Tanya Walsh, Professors Helen Worthington and Jan Clarkson attended. The American Dental Association (ADA) have been promoting their collaboration with Cochrane Oral Health and it was highlighted in a plenary session as an exemplar for guideline development.

There were 5 Manchester winners in the clinical case section of the undergraduate poster presentation prize at the British Society of Paediatric Dentristry (BSPD) annual conference last week at Media City. These were Josh Jackson, Cara Sandler, Olivia Barratt, Caroline Bunting and Manas Dave. Photos of the event on our FaceBook page.

Dr Lucy O’Malley is returning to work next week after a period of maternity leave with her daughter Annie. We look forward to seeing her back in the office!!

I am in Belfast attending the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS) Conference. I am on Council as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Oral Surgery but Helen Petersen is to become the new Editor-in-Chief soon and I will continue on Council as an Elected Member. A number of our OMFS postgraduate students attended and also junior and senior clinical staff and an undergraduate Year 5 student, Amir Treifi, who presented an excellent poster. Tamsin Cooper, Specialist Registrar, won First Prize of the 91 poster presentations.
