Another week in the life of a dental dean

6 October 2017

Another week in the life of a dental dean

This week was all about Paediatric Dentistry.  Anastasia Szalk and Stephanie Azmy, Year 5 students delivered the parent education programme at Westmorlands primary school last week alongside Dr Siobhan Barry, Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry. There are two further school visits planned in October and November.

The Open Day went well on Saturday. Dr Siobhan Barry gave the talk to potential BDS and BSc students and Ismail Khalil, Year 5 BDS student, sourced equipment and organised the workshops and he was amazing! The next Open Day will be Saturday 14th October. Dr Barry is now attending the International Association for Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) in Chile.

We had our Dental Leadership Team Meeting this week and discussed potential joint PhD programmes with Zurich Dental School that is being worked on by Dr Nick Silikas. We discussed our plan to attend the BDA annual conference that will be combined with the Dentistry Show in Birmingham next May (shame it’s moving from Manchester!), and our plan to attend the IADR meeting in London 2018. Dr Tanya Walsh and Professor Helen Worthington have been invited to speak at the 8th International Conference on Methodological Issues in Oral Health Research to be held in May 2018 at the Faculty of Dentistry Hong Kong University.

On Wednesday evening I attended the Federation of Greater Manchester LDCs meeting as Chair of the GMCA (Greater Manchester Combined Authority) ‘Dental System Leadership Group’ to provide an overview of activity across Greater Manchester and the activity of the Managed Clinical Networks.

I met with Chandni Nakum and Haleema Rashid, new MDSS Presidents, to discuss their plans for the year. I am very proud of our students and always amazed by how much they do!

This weekend is the British Dental Student Association (BDSA) Sports Day (7-9 October) hosted by Manchester students! This will be held at Parrs Wood High School in East Didsbury and there are going to be around 1000 dental students attending and staying in 14 hotels. Good luck to the Manchester students and well done to Alicia Patel, Year 4, and Aaina Aggarwal, Year 5 for organising this huge event! https://www.bdsamanchester2017.com and  https://www.facebook.com/bdsamanchester2017/

Claire Stevens, Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, and President of British Society for Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) is speaking at the Local Branch BSPD meeting on 10th October at 7.00pm in MANDEC, ‘Stop! Collaborate, and Listen – why children’s oral health is everyone’s business.’ Tea and coffee from 6.30pm.

Teresa Smith is planning to support a shelter in the City Centre called Barnabus for the focus of our Christmas charity this year. There will be a large Christmas Donations box in the Kitchen in the JR Moore Building with a list of what items are needed and then Teresa will drop all donations off to Barnabus on 15th December.
