Europe-wide survey on antibiotic use

6 February 2019

Europe-wide survey on antibiotic use

Dentists and other healthcare workers from across the UK and Europe are being invited to take part in a Europe-wide survey on their knowledge of and attitudes towards antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance.

The survey is funded by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and developed by Public Health England with input from the Council of European Dentists. It will help shape and inform the direction of future policy, education and communication campaigns targeted at those in the healthcare sector.

Previous studies have mostly focused on the general public and medical students, highlighting a gap in the understanding of these topics by healthcare workers.

The survey should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. It closes on 14 February 2019.

Dentists have a role to play in reducing the amount of antibiotic prescribing. We are campaigning for properly funded urgent treatment slots and we have called for a removal of the pressures that push dental patients to GPs, to help bring down antibiotic prescribing rates.

The BDA and partners at the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) recently released the latest version of their Antimicrobial Prescribing Self-Audit Tool, which is designed to help colleagues build on their success in reducing prescriptions.
