BDA Northern Ireland welcomed its new Branch President for 2018, Martin W Curran on Friday 12 January at a ceremony at The Great Hall, Queen's University Belfast.
The ceremony commenced with a drinks reception in the Naughton Gallery followed by dinner and speeches in the Great Hall. The evening was attended by family, friends and colleagues from across all fields of the dental profession in Northern Ireland, and beyond.
Guest speakers included BDA President Peter Dyer, and Past Northern Ireland Dental Practice Committee Chair, Peter Crooks.
The Presidents Chain of Office was presented to Martin by 2017 Branch President, Professor David Hussey. Martin thanked those in attendance for their support and highlighted the upcoming programme of events for 2018, which will focus on communication, both personal and professional.

Martin is a Specialist Oral Surgeon and Practice Principal. He is a lifelong resident of Belfast and qualified in dentistry from Queens University in 1980. He is the proprietor, principle and manager of the Curran Oral Surgery Clinic currently based on the Lisburn Road Belfast. His practice runs the tongue-tie service for babies for Northern Ireland.
He worked in Royal Victoria Hospital, training in oral surgery for six years before opening his specialist Oral Surgery Clinic in 1987. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, joining in 1985 following completion of his fellowship. He is also a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners at the Royal College of Surgeons England. He is a Council member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons.
Martin has been involved with the BDA for 37 years, joining as a student, and he has assisted the BDA by representing the views of oral surgeons.
He is the 95th President of the BDA Northern Ireland Branch to take up post- the first ever President, MJ Maguire, was installed in 1923.
