Credit or Debit Card fees

9 January 2018

Credit or Debit Card fees

From 13 January 2018 a new EU directive called the Payment Services Directive comes into force. This will stop businesses such as dental practices from being able to apply charges when patients use their debit or credit cards to make payments.

There are some allowances in place for when a business sells outside of the UK as banks may charge higher fees due to it being overseas. There are also some allowances for travel companies who apply booking fees.

BDA guidance on NHS patients and patients paying the NHS charges with their credit/debit card has always been that they must not be charged anything other than what is in the NHS Dental Charges Regulations. These regulations only allow NHS providers to charge for the relevant banded course of treatment and nothing more.
