Illegal tooth whitening training provider prosecuted by GDC

The GDC has secured its first prosecution against an illegal tooth whitening training provider. On 1 June 2015, the sole director of ‘Smile Like the Stars Training Limited’, Martyn Collier, was found guilty at Cwmbran Magistrates Court of two offences of unlawfully practising dentistry.

Both offences took place on 3 March 2015 at the Best Western Hotel, Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel and Spa, Usk, Monmouthshire.

Mr Collier, who has never registered with the GDC and does not possess the relevant qualifications to practise dentistry, was found guilty of unlawfully practising tooth whitening on two individuals whilst he was ‘training’ them to become tooth whiteners.

Mr Collier charged the two individuals £1,495 each for tooth whitening training which they booked via his website, ‘The Teeth Whitening Training School’. They were falsely told that the training would result in a qualification that would legally allow them to offer tooth whitening treatments. Mr Collier provided them with false and misleading documents about the legality of his tooth whitening training and methods to avoid prosecution.

He was sentenced to a three year conditional discharge. He was ordered to pay £1,495 to his victims, a £15 victim surcharge and costs of £3,500 of GDC.
