Margaret K Ross OBE

17 July 2017

Margaret K Ross OBE

In the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours list, it was announced that Margaret Ross has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to Dentistry. Margaret is Senior Lecturer for Dental Care Professionals and Programme Director of the BSc (Hons) in Oral Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, and is based in Edinburgh Dental Institute.  She is a past President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene & Therapy and also a previous recipient of the Dr Gerald Leatherman Award for services to the profession and BSDHT.

In her position as Senior Lecturer, she has focussed on the research component of her appointment and endeavoured to strengthen the academic and professional profile of all DCPs, but in particular of hygienists and hygienist-therapists.  To date, she has published a significant number of papers in this field and has lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally.  She is a reviewer for the British Dental Journal, European Journal of Dental Education, Community Dental Health and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene.

Margaret is Chair of the Advisory Board for Dental Care Professionals in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, where she is currently developing two new diplomas for dental hygienists and therapists in paediatric dentistry and implant care.  She was awarded the College’s Dental Faculty Gold Medal for services to the College in 2016, which was the first time this prestigious award was made to a non-dentist.  Earlier this year, Margaret was awarded a Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of the same College.  She will be presented with her OBE later this year.
